Non-PC Technologies

Please post a short description of a proposed non-PC technology.  Your description should be 3-4 sentences and need not have your name associated with it.  The exercise in class on Thursday is to discuss these ideas and identify what makes them potentially good or bad ideas.

Come to class ready to be creative!

1. Some kind of electronic that could attach to your body in some way and measure your caloric intake and outake would be helpful.  This would revolutionize weight loss systems in which calories must be carefully counted and remembered.  This portable device would allow users to know their caloric intake at meals as well as calories burned through exercise and other daily activities.

2. I think we should have some kind of technology, that could help people know exactly what they want. For example if you were to go to walmart in search of a shirt it would allow you to know which shirt would maximize your happiness, or if you go to a resturant which meal would benefit you the most and taste the best.

3. What if there was some type of technology that allowed you to take a "virtual vacation?" Something that lets you create your own space to take a break from life without actually leaving your home. So, you can pretend/imagine you're on the beach when it's really snowing outside or see mountain views from your country home.

4. I think a really helpful technological advance could be made in the area of food.  A robot self-contained behind a small oven and a couple of stove burners would be all it takes.  All you would have to do would be refill ingredients in some sort of holding container and give an order.  This would provide a personal short order cook with hundreds of menu options, there 24/7 for any of your demands.  This technology would definately save time for the busiest lifestyles.

I think we should have technology to allow us to dream our studies or a book so that we don't have to do studies during the day. Like, we could hook up a virtual book to a cord to a magnet that sticks to our brain. It would have to allow us to retain our knowledge though. Then, we would have more time during the day for other things. Or... We could dream our favorite TV shows while we are sleeping. This seems really out there but who knows? It could happen.

I think we should have technology that works out your body without you having to do actual work. This technology would help those who are overweight to the point where they can't do anything. The machine would attach to the person and begin to work you out and get you down to a size where you were capable to actually do stuff on your own. This may sound a little lazy to some but it could help those who are overweight.

I think there should be a more technologicaly advanced toothbrush. Maybe a mouthguard you put on the top and bottom that optimizes brush time, finds enamel deficiencies, detects cavities. I just think oral hygiene is incredibly important and is a field of technology that took leaps with the motorized brushes but has fallen off with the inability to continue advancing the screen onthe tooth brush or a simple timer telling you you are done. I think that this type of technology would be great for people of all ages, it could cut back medical bills for dentist visits, and have other possibilities like maybe being a little more harsh if it is scrubbing of candy or soda while being soft and gentle if it finds healthier foods. edited 02:43, 11 Sep 2008

There should be some kind of technology that records what you see. Ever want to go back to what you saw that day whether it be a teacher's lecture, a conversation you had, or a vacation? Ever had one of those moments where you wish you had a camera or camcorder? It could be a chip implanted in your brain or as simple as a contact lense with a wireless hardrive you put in your pocket and connect to your computer later.

There should be some kind of techonolgy to help people sleep. For example maybe an implanted device in the brain that releases chemicals that helps induce a kind of peacefull sleep. Also this device would come with some kind of internal alarm that can wake you up after a specific number of hours. This will help out alot of people who have trouble sleeping at night or people who are tired in the daytime and want to nap for a while but can't fall asleep.

We are in a millennium filled with technology and innovation. We need to capitalize on developments as each passing day can get very tough without the necessary tools to finish jobs and tasks without exerting much effort. Some essays describe our world as the sneak peek towards the future - some of it might be true and some of it may be fallacious but, technology is always a recipient of change so it's best to say that we are being swept by its mighty current.
